Auction #55 – KidLit Cares: Portfolio Critique and Evaluation from Author/Illustrator Marla Frazee

Welcome to KidLit Cares, an online talent auction to benefit the Red Cross relief effort to help communities recover from Superstorm Sandy. KidLit Cares was started by the very awesome Kate Messner, but I’m taking over Round 2. Agents, editors, authors, illustrators and other generous people have donated various services to be auctioned off to the highest bidder, with donations being made directly to the Red Cross disaster relief fund. Marla Frazee was awarded a Caldecott Honor for All the World and A Couple of Boys Have the Best Week Ever. She is the author-illustrator of Roller Coaster, Walk On!, The Boss Baby, and Boot & Shoe, as well as the illustrator of many other books including The Seven Silly Eaters, and the NYT bestselling Clementine series. She lives in Pasadena, CA, and works in a small backyard cabin under an avocado tree.

Portfolio Critique and Evaluation – after viewing an online portfolio, we will schedule an appointment for a 15 – 20 minute phone consultation about individual images, the body of work, and any other questions pertaining to children’s book illustration.

Opening Bid: $30

Auction #54 – KidLit Cares: One Hour Phone Call with Author Rebecca Kai Dotlich

Rebecca Kai Dotlich grew up in the Midwest exploring trails by the creek, reading comic books, making paper dolls and building snowmen. She is a children’s poet and picture book author of titles such as Bella and Bean (an SCBWI Golden Kite Honor) and What Is Science? (Subaru SB&F finalist and Bank Street’s Best Book of the year.) She gives poetry workshops, visits classrooms across the country, and speaks at conferences, retreats, libraries and schools to teachers, aspiring writers and students of all ages. Her books have received the Gold Oppenheim Toy Portfolio Award as well as an IRA Children’s Choice and her work has been featured on Reading Rainbow and the PBS children’s show Between the Lions. She is the mother of two and grandmother of four. Rebecca still reads comic books and builds snowmen. Her newest picture book, WHAT CAN A CRANE PICK UP? (Illustrated by Mike Lowery) received a *starred* review from Publisher’s Weekly.

This auction is for a one hour phone call to discuss whatever you would like about your own work and career. You might want to workshop a few poems or discuss the poetry writing process or ask publication questions, etc.

Auction #40 – KidLit Cares: 20 Minute Phone Call with Agent Marcia Wernick

From the Wernick & Pratt Agency website: After working and traveling around Europe after college, and working in different jobs in New York City, Marcia Wernick finally found her calling in children’s publishing. She began working at the Sheldon Fogelman Agency, in subsidiary rights, advancing to director of subsidiary rights. She has attended the Bologna Children’s Book Fair more than a dozen times, enjoying the international camaraderie of the children’s book industry. When she realized that working directly with the authors and illustrators brought her the most joy, she focused on the agenting side of the business. She became a full time agent, bringing in many authors and illustrators to the agency.  Among the clients she brought in, and with whom she continues to work, are Bryan Collier, Elizabeth Cody Kimmel, Kathleen O’Dell, Jackie Urbanovic, Alexandra Boiger, and Mo Willems, who she introduced to the children’s book publishing world.  Her clients now range from the well-established to those just beginning their careers.

Agent Marcia Wernick is offering a 20-minute phone call about children’s book writing and illustrating to the high bidder for this auction. The winner will have the opportunity for a personal, one on one phone conversation to discuss their work, as well as ask questions about the children’s book industry.

James Dashner was born and raised in Georgia but now lives in the Rocky Mountains with his family. He has four kids, which some might think is too many but he thinks is just right. Once upon a time, James studied accounting and worked in the field of finance, but has been writing full time for several years. (He doesn’t miss numbers. At all.)

In his free time, James loves to read, watch movies and (good) TV shows, snow ski, and read. (Reading was mentioned twice on purpose.) Most of all, he’s thankful that he gets to make a living writing stories and considers himself pretty much the luckiest guy on the planet.

This auction presents a very unique opportunity for a fan: a 30 minute phone conversation with The Maze Runner series author James Dashner.
