Auction #32 – KidLit Cares: Phone Call with Author James Dashner

Welcome to KidLit Cares, an online talent auction to benefit the Red Cross relief effort to help communities recover from Superstorm Sandy. KidLit Cares was started by the very awesome Kate Messner, but I’m taking over Round 2. Agents, editors, authors, illustrators and other generous people have donated various services to be auctioned off to the highest bidder, with donations being made directly to the Red Cross disaster relief fund. Now, on to the auction!

James Dashner was born and raised in Georgia but now lives in the Rocky Mountains with his family. He has four kids, which some might think is too many but he thinks is just right. Once upon a time, James studied accounting and worked in the field of finance, but has been writing full time for several years. (He doesn’t miss numbers. At all.)

In his free time, James loves to read, watch movies and (good) TV shows, snow ski, and read. (Reading was mentioned twice on purpose.) Most of all, he’s thankful that he gets to make a living writing stories and considers himself pretty much the luckiest guy on the planet.

This auction presents a very unique opportunity for a fan: a 30 minute phone conversation with The Maze Runner series author James Dashner.

This auction closes at 10pm Eastern Standard Time on November 24. Any bids placed after that time will be void.

Lois Lowry is known for her versatility and invention as a writer. She is the author of more than thirty books for young adults. She has received countless honors, among them the Newbery Medal for two of her novels, Number the Stars and The Giver, the first novel in the Giver Quartet. Ms. Lowry now divides her time between Cambridge, MA and an 1840s farmhouse in Maine.

This auction consists of Four newly published and redesigned hardcover books of the Giver quartet: The Giver, Gathering Blue, The Messenger, and the newly published (an currently a NYT bestseller!) Son. All four will be personally signed by Lois Lowry.

Caroline Starr Rose is the author of the historical verse novel, MAY B., (2012) and the forthcoming picture book, OVER IN THE WETLANDS (2014). Caroline is offering to critique the first 20 pages of a verse novel manuscript or and entire picture book manuscript.

Helaine is offering a 45-minute Skype school visit, during which she will provide numerous teachable moments (how to come up with ideas, the importance of revision, choosing excellent vocabulary) as well as make kids laugh so hard they fall out of their seats. She will also read the ever-popular Ode to Underwear.
