Auction #62 – KidLit Cares: 100 Page Manuscript Critique and Signed Books from Author Nova Ren Suma

Welcome to KidLit Cares, an online talent auction to benefit the Red Cross relief effort to help communities recover from Superstorm Sandy. Agents, editors, authors, illustrators and other generous people have donated various services to be auctioned off to the highest bidder, with donations being made directly to the Red Cross disaster relief fund. Nova Ren Suma is the author of the YA novel IMAGINARY GIRLS (Dutton, 2011) and the middle-grade novel DANI NOIR (Aladdin, 2009), recently reissued for the YA shelves as FADE OUT (Simon Pulse, 2012). She has an MFA in fiction from Columbia University and has been awarded fiction fellowships from the New York Foundation for the Arts, the MacDowell Colony, Yaddo, the Djerassi Resident Artists Program, and the Millay Colony. Her new YA novel, 17 & GONE, will come out March 2013 from Dutton. She lives in New York City and teaches YA writing with Mediabistro. For this auction, Nova is offering a manuscript critique of up to 100 pages of a YA or middle-grade novel, plus signed copies of IMAGINARY GIRLS, FADE OUT, and 17 & GONE (once books are available in 2013).

Auction #61 – KidLit Cares: Query Critique and 20 Minute Phone Call with Senior Literary Agent, Gordon Warnock

Tara Lazar is a children’s book author, mother, foodie and boogeyman assassin (currently booked at 3am nightly). Her debut picture book, THE MONSTORE, will be opening in your town June 2013 from Aladdin/Simon & Schuster. I THOUGHT THIS WAS A BEAR BOOK follows from Aladdin in 2014, with LITTLE RED GLIDING HOOD skating your way via Random House Children’s in Fall 2014. She runs November’s Picture Book Idea Month (PiBoIdMo) event at taralazar.com.

This auction consists of one picture book critique to be claimed at any time. Tara has three books under contract with two of the Big 6 publishers and teaches picture book writing for The Writer’s Circle Workshops. You’ll receive a thorough review of everything from concept to execution, and Tara will even critique revisions of the same manuscript until it’s submission-ready.

She’s all about kidlit: from her podcasts Brain Burps About Books and Brain Burps About Books: Marketing, a blog and newsletter to her monthly appearances on Good Morning Connecticut, recommending great kid’s books. Her book trailers have been finalists in both the Moby and SLJ Trailee awards and her trailer for Little Chicken’s Big Day just won a Trailee and now she’s teaching people how to make videos! Katie presents at schools and conferences internationally, has taught children’s writing in a maximum security prison and is on the advisory board for the Brooke Jackman Foundation, a literacy-based charity.

For the winner of this auction, Katie is offering a one hour Skype visit including a full presentation on the process and creation of Katie’s latest picture book, Little Chicken’s Big Day! Rebecca Kai Dotlich grew up in the Midwest exploring trails by the creek, reading comic books, making paper dolls and building snowmen. She is a children’s poet and picture book author of titles such as Bella and Bean (an SCBWI Golden Kite Honor) and What Is Science? (Subaru SB&F finalist and Bank Street’s Best Book of the year.) She gives poetry workshops, visits classrooms across the country, and speaks at conferences, retreats, libraries and schools to teachers, aspiring writers and students of all ages. Her books have received the Gold Oppenheim Toy Portfolio Award as well as an IRA Children’s Choice and her work has been featured on Reading Rainbow and the PBS children’s show Between the Lions. She is the mother of two and grandmother of four. Rebecca still reads comic books and builds snowmen. Her newest picture book, WHAT CAN A CRANE PICK UP? (Illustrated by Mike Lowery) received a *starred* review from Publisher’s Weekly.

This auction is for a one hour phone call to discuss whatever you would like about your own work and career. You might want to workshop a few poems or discuss the poetry writing process or ask publication questions, etc.
